Soundtrack - "The Woods"

Narration - The unknown voices that speak to the central character when she is asleep shows an inner conflict that tries to explain why she is at this sort of boarding school for troubled kids. The voices are not the inner thoughts of the principle character . The narration had to be recorded "wild" as the voices were dubbed over one another. because the voices were from an unkown character, it suggests that there is something going on with either the school or inside the girls head. This tries to explain the general theme of the movie with this girl being an arsonist.

Music - The music at the start of the film when the forest is being shown suggests peace and quiet and a happy, calm and relaxed experience. This is in direct contrast to the type of film it is leading the viewer to a false sense of security. The music is overlapped from the outside forest to the inside of the car. In other words, the music goes from extraneous to practical and then back to extraneous when the characters get out of the car.

Sound Effects (FX) - Alot of the sound effects in this movie can be classified as "soft". The birds chirping in the forest and around the house is the most obvious one. While we never see the birds themselves, we know they are there. "Wild" sound effects were used in the food hall. With a number of girls runing around, eating and talking at once, the effects do not need to be exactly frame accurate. The collection of different noises is enough to set the scene for the hall. "Hard" or "frame accurate" effects include the closing of the car doors. These need to be done exactly so there is no gap in between the action and the sound. The foley artsist for this movie did well to get the sound right for the type of car. The sound of a new BMW car door closing is different to that of an old HR. Sound effects such as a clock ticking, gravel under shoes and wind were exaggerated so as to create suspense and create an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.

Dialogue/Speech - The dialogue from the parents and the teacher o the school suggests high class. The pronunciation and proper language and grammar show the viewer that this place is respectable. The relationship between the mother and the daughter is shopwn when the car leaves and all the mother has to say to the daughter is "dont let your nails get dirty". The dialogue between the characters could have been recorded using the technique of "lip sync" as all the dialogue could be recorded using boom mics or plant mics.
